Vicodin Addiction

Drug addiction is, at its most basic, the compulsion to continue to consume legal or illegal drugs for the purpose of intoxication and to the detriment of one's health and role in society. The exact manifestions of this is as varied as the substances consumed and Vicodin addiction is no different.

What seems obvious to the physicist is lost on the addict but "What goes up must come down" and crashing down they do come. Not only are there the obviously negative effects of withdrawl and craving but there is a decreased desire for the normal things in life, everything pales next to the experience of being on drugs. You can see why the likelihood of returning to usage is so high.

Repeated usage of any controlled substance sets off a cascade of natural responses by your body where the pleasurable effects of early usage initate what is known as the Reward Circuit (mesolimbic system) in which several areas of the brain are trained, in concert, to associate a beneficial reaction to drug ingestion. Drug addiction is the ultimate result of a natural system of pleasure seeking that has been derailed by the introduction powerful controlled substances to the delicate human mechanism.

Prescription drug addiction can be particularly difficult to diagnose and treat. This is because of the intersection/overlap of the doctor guided, therapeutic environment with a patients own volitional involvement in their cure. In their own estimation a prescription drug addict considers themselves to be merely continuing a course of therapy recommended them by a medical professional.
