Xanax Addiction
Drug addiction is, at its most basic, the compulsion to continue to consume legal or illegal drugs for the purpose of intoxication and to the detriment of one's health and role in society. The exact manifestions of this is as varied as the substances consumed and Xanax addiction is no different.
Here is the general arc of drug abuse:
1. Preoccupation/Anticipation: thoughts of drugs, of scoring, using, getting "high" come to dominate the daily thoughts making productive interaction take a back seat to drug seeking behavior.
2. Binge/Intoxication: preoccupying thoughts and anticipation motivate the addict into physical action, the actual consumption of the individuals drug of choice. This often involves totally inappropriate drug seeking behavior: lying, stealing, risky interactions with criminals, a complete loss of once significant priorities, all in the service of acquiring the "drug of choice" for the addict.
3. Withdrawl/Negative Affect: "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." What seems obvious to the physicist is lost on the addict but "What goes up must come down" and crashing down they do come. Not only are there the obviously negative effects of withdrawl and craving but there is a decreased desire for the normal things in life, everything pales next to the experience of being on drugs. You can see why the likelihood of returning to usage is so high.Xanax (alprazolam) is a Central Nervous System depressant prescribed to treat anxiety, acute stress reactions and panic attacks. Anyone addicted to Xanax should undergo a medically supervised detoxification by gradually tapering off the dosage.
Repeated usage of any controlled substance sets off a cascade of natural responses by your body where the pleasurable effects of early usage initate what is known as the Reward Circuit (mesolimbic system) in which several areas of the brain are trained, in concert, to associate a beneficial reaction to drug ingestion. Drug addiction is the ultimate result of a natural system of pleasure seeking that has been derailed by the introduction powerful controlled substances to the delicate human mechanism.
Prescription drug addiction can be particularly difficult to diagnose and treat. This is because of the intersection/overlap of the doctor guided, therapeutic environment with a patients own volitional involvement in their cure. In their own estimation a prescription drug addict considers themselves to be merely continuing a course of therapy recommended them by a medical professional.
The mechanism of drug addiction is complex, please seek expert guidance before attempting to stop any serious drug addiction. If you or someone you love has a problem with Xanax addiction please give us a call at 877-777-1963, we're here to help.
