Sober Companions™

Wonderland realizes life does not stop when a client comes in for treatment. Making the commitment to receive help is an essential step. Nevertheless, the twists & turns of life can arise during treatment - often these sudden changes need to be addressed by the client. Some of these events can be planned for in advance, but others happen without any notice. We recognize that certain personal events, ranging from the death of a family member to the birthday of a child, can arise during a client’s stay at Wonderland.

A death in the family is a tragic and prime example of what Wonderland personal and travel support has been designed to address. Wonderland recognizes the importance of a client being able to be sober and present for family and friends, both giving and receiving the support necessary during the grieving process. Wonderland will help the client through this difficult stage of their recovery by providing a sober companion to accompany the client to all external events. If travel is necessary, the sober companion will fly out of town with the client, staying with them on 24/7 basis in the role of a supportive friend or personal assistant. When the ceremonies have been completed, the sober companion will transport the client back to Wonderland. We understand how difficult change in any form, particularly tragedy, can be in early sobriety, and we are here to make sure the client continues on the road to recovery.

Another example of a family event which can be planned for is the birthday of a child. If a parent is a client at Wonderland and their child is having a birthday which they have addressed with their treatment team, there is no reason why they cannot be present. Accompanied by a sober companion, the parent can not only attend the party, but also be involved in the pre-party preparations. Keeping out of the way, the sober companion will ensure the client’s sobriety while in the arena of the family. Afterwards, the client will travel with the sober companion back to Wonderland and their program will continue on pace.

Finally, if a family member or close friend is getting married, in or out of town, and it is important for the client to attend the wedding, the sober companion will travel and attend with the client. Such pre-planned events naturally must be addressed in advance so the Wonderland treatment team can discuss the issue with the client and make the necessary arrangements. We realize that these are only three possible examples of personal and travel necessities in a client’s life, and others will be addressed on a case by case basis. What we want to convey to our clients and their family members is the essential point that Wonderland is here to support you in and beyond the realm of treatment.
