Psychiatric Care

In the three-fold nature of the disease of alcoholism and addiction, the obsession and compulsion of the mind is a central symptom for the treating psychiatrist to address. Beyond the disease, many addicts and alcoholics have co-occurring mental and emotional disorders. Wonderland will work with a client's existing psychiatrist, physician and specialists to provide quality care on admission, during treatment and as part of the client's aftercare program. If a client does not have their own psychiatrist, we can make an appropriate referral. Our team understands the significance and value of having clients continue with the healthcare professionals they know and trust. We do not encourage clients to change their current healthcare professionals.

If a client brings prescription medications with them to Wonderland, they will be disposed of to avoid any possible tampering or contamination, then immediately refilled for the client. All medications will be kept securely and distributed by Wonderland staff. No client at Wonderland will be allowed to maintain possession of any form of prescribed medication during the period of residential stay.

Many addicts and alcoholics stop taking their psychiatric medications while in the depths of their addiction. In those cases, we'll have the client evaluated and prescribed the necessary medication. Our team of addiction professionals knows how essential it is to allow the client to become stabilized prior to prescribing medication. Many psychiatrists, without proper training in addictive disorders, prescribe medications treating the symptoms of use such as paranoia, depression or psychotic behavior. These behaviors most of the time dissipate after a few days of treatment.
